Abstract. The article examines Russian-Romanian relations in the early twentieth century. During the period under review, Romania has several times managed to change its foreign policy priorities. By 1914, the country was sufficiently uncertain about its sympathies for any of the great powers. First of all, this concerns relations between Romania and Austria-Hungary and Russia. The key moment that contributed to the rapprochement of the Russian Empire and the Kingdom of Romania on the eve of the First World War was the visit of Emperor Nicholas II to the Romanian port of Constanta in June 1914. The article, based on sources and literature, analyzed the main issues with which the neighboring countries approached this significant event, and also considered the cultural and diplomatic results of the visit.

Keywords. The Russian Empire, Nicholas II, Romania, World War I, the beginning of the twentieth century
